According to the electronic version of the Nikkei Shimbun dated July 18, 2019, DNP will start an event business utilizing intellectual property (IP) in collaboration with companies that possess IPs of popular animation, cartoons, and games. By purchasing the right to use IP in the event, they intend to develop the event in combination with their own technologies and achieve a total of ¥5 billion in sales. This is 250 million yen per month as they plan to reach ¥5 billion over the next 20 months. This may not necessarily be a huge business for large companies like DNP, but it is a new business that can utilize the latest patented digital technologies such as AR (augmented reality) owned by DNP. If it can make a profit first of all, that will be fine. The “right to use IP in the event” may be a combination of the right to reproduce the game program or the game itself (movie work), the right to adapt the game, the right to send the game to the public, the right to show the game, etc. The right to use IP in the event will be granted by the owner of the game for a limited period of time or for a limited purpose. This is a happy scheme to everyone because game companies can expect sales to increase and advertise, and gamers can experience game play in different ways than on their own devices. This is a business that can take into account the synergistic effects brought about by both parties and expect various economic ripple effects resulting from them.
